Alpha-Pinene in Acidic Conditions: Products Determination and the Reaction Kinetics

One step conversion of alpha-pinene into an industrially-bulk chemical is a long lasting’s journey. It composes the major component in turpuntine oil. This report discloses conversion of alpha-pinene in acidic system i.e. hydrochloric and nitric acid mixtures. The acid ratios, reaction time and temperatures were studied to discriminate product formation including the reaction kinetic. Product identification was undertaken by using gas chromatography (GC), infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS). It was isolated 65.74% yield of bornyl chloride, and also other minor products such as norbornyl chloride, champheil hydrochloride, trans- and cis-b-ocimene, camphene, 2-carene, limonene, b-myrcene, nonane, and p-cymene. The increasing of acidic ratio, reaction temperature and reaction time significantly accelerates the product formation. It was also found that the reaction follows first order reaction with rate equation LnCt = 45,766 – 6×10-5t.

Quinazoline Alkaloid from Indonesian Angsret (Spathodea campanulata Beauv) Stembark as A Growth Inhibitor of Staphylococcus aureus*

An quinazoline alkaloid was isolated as 4a,8a-dihydroxy-7-methyl-3,4,4a,5-tetrahydroquinazoline-6,8(7H,8aH)-dione [1] from Spathodea campanulata Beauv stembark. Isolation was undertaken following common procedure for alkaloid isolation following separation under flash column chromatography. Chemical identification was performed using dragendorf test, and the structure was confirmed by UV-Vis, IR, and NMR spectrometry. In addition, the antibacterial test was taken place by a growth inhibiting activity on Staphylococcus aureus in a range concentration.

We offer research topic for some undergraduate students (2-4 students). The topic will include on Profilling of the Secondary Metabolite from Local Agriculture and Horticulture’s Product. Most of the methods will be learned including procedure of extraction-isolation (gas/solid) and spectrometry analysis. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS) will be applied.
